Field Notes

Description:

Large bird, adult male and female have a blackish-brown back and breast; a white head, neck, and tail; and yellow feet and beak.

Habitat:

Woodlands, forest, field coastal areas of sea,bay and rivers. Near large bodies of water.

Notes:

This Eagle was hunting. After a failed fishing attempt it perched and quickly raided the Geese and caught them totally off guard, snatching a gosling. Usually the Eagles I observe are fishing and heavily mobbed by Gulls and or Crows. The alarms mobbing birds cry out sends all the small birds in to hiding. The Geese usually become silent and huddle, unharmed. This Eagle raided the huddle. Only one Gull made a mobbing attempt and sounded an alarm when the Eagle perched above the Geese about 50 ft away from them. A single Crow sat silently on a log next to where the Eagle landed with it's catch. The Crow watched the Eagle eating it's gosling meal. The Geese in their huddle stayed put and quite a few feet away. The Eagle spent about 30 minutes eating the gosling. This is the first time I have observed an Eagle raiding the Geese. I think the Crow may have been waiting silently near the Eagle in hopes of securing the left overs for itself. I have observed an Eagle dropping large fish remains for the Gulls. I believe it is to distract the Gull's so they will not follow the Eagle home. The hunting hours and habits of the Eagles here have changed with the arrival of the Turkey Vultures.
