Milk Snake
Lampropeltis triangulum
32.72, -94.1217
Field Notes
Description:
Gray with red blotches outlined in black. There is another individual in the last photo, which just shows the variation in this species, even on the same site.
Habitat:
One individual was found stuffed between two pieces of wood on a bridge. Was a very weird place to see a snake and surprised all of us in the group. The second was found under some loose bark on a fallen tree. Both were found in piney woods areas.
Notes:
A recent paper was published that split apart many subspecies of the milk snake into separate species. Although I agree they should be split into separate species, the paper failed to include portions of Texas making milk snakes in that area essentially not exist anymore. So when someone publishes a paper and wants to include all areas this snake is found, then I will consider believing it then :)
