Field Notes

Description:

Brownish-gray with streaks; a central dark spot on the chest. The song is one of the most identifiable of the sparrows.

Habitat:

Many habitats, especially riparian. This one was in a tidal marsh.

Notes:

Three subspecies of this sparrow are restricted to tidal salt marshes in the San Francisco Bay region. All three are on the CDFW species of special concern list.
