Field Notes

Description:

Squirrel. Medium sized, gray. Face was solid. Ears are low on head and small.

Habitat:

Spotted in Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge main road.

Notes:

We spotted this squirrel along the roadside as he crossed from one side to the other. These pictures are poor; it was raining, the mosquitoes were horrendous and I was shooting through the window. Unfortunately some unappreciative patron didn't think a squirrel was worth watching and blew the horn to scare it away. I believe this is a Delmarva Peninsula Fox Squirrel. These have been on the endangered list.

Species ID Suggestions

Eastern Gray Squirrel

Sciurus carolinensis

Thanks for the suggested ID, FaredinAliyevski. These shots were really bad; I was able to get better ones the next day and should have taken this spotting down. This is definitely a Delmarva Peninsula Fox Squirrel. The ears are more rounded and set further back on the head. The face is more pointed than the Eastern Gray Squirrel. When it came out of the woods, my first thought was that it was a possum because of its pointy face.
