Field Notes

Description:

Juvenile tropical kingbird perched on a length of barbed wire commonly used in fences in rural Costa Rica. These tyrant flycatchers choose prominent, open perches. Adults grow up to 22 cm--this juvenile may have been smaller than that, but I'm not sure by how much. This particular bird also has a less prominent eye mask than the fully grown adult.
