Field Notes

Description:

Nymphalidae; Satyrinae; Lethe europa cevanna Fruhstorfer, 1911. This Bamboo Tree Brown is a female (identified from comparison with pictures in Philippine Lepidoptera and Wikipedia). I have been hoping to see this kind of butterfly for several years and, at last, I saw this one. You can imagine my frustration when my view was slightly obscured by foliage, especially the "little tails" of the rear wings. Unfortunately, I only managed one picture before it flew off and I completely lost sight of it.

Habitat:

Spotted in the rice mill backyard, on unidentified foliage. In view of this butterflies common name, I think I should mention that there are numerous stands of bamboo in the rice mill backyard and around the perimeter of the adjacent rice fields.
