Field Notes

Description:

We found this beautiful tree frog calling from a meter off the ground, perched on a leaf near a temporary pond in a road cut deep in the Costa Rican rainforest.

Notes:

The unusual thing about this sighting is that this frog is considered a lowland species but we found it in premontane forest, around 900m in elevation. Researchers familiar with this area tell me that they have been seeing this frog more often, though infrequently at this elevation since 2011. It was found at the Rara Avis Rainforest Lodge and reserve. I also found it on my Mom's birthday!

If you would like to discover beautiful rainforest wildlife like this frog, for yourself. I highly recommend the Rara Avis Rainforest Lodge in Costa Rica. http://www.rara-avis.com. That is where I made this photo.

Awesome shot & find. It's always cool when you see something out of the ordinary. I've heard a lot of great things about the wildlife and scenery in Costa Rica - Hopefully I get down there one day.
Beautiful frog! And that's great they have been seeing more of them since so many species of frogs in the tropics are declining!
