Field Notes

Description:

My first Moth ever required an rescue operation since he decided to relax at a driveway! I do understand now why moths are so faschinating! Size: 7 cm
(normal wingspan: 70 - 120mm)

Habitat:

Asfalt driveway, urban area 100m from Indian Ocean.

Notes:

The Verdant Hawk is the only member of the genus Euchloron.
Location: Africa (south of the Sahara), Madagascar
Habitat: Forested areas

Searching for information about this species made me run in to several pages where it was for sale! Even though it is a quite common moth in Africa, I find that concept quite sad (unless it is necessary for research).

You are right! But in scandinavia the moths look very boring (with a few exceptions). Most of them are small and brown. The butterflies here (Sweden) have much more wow-factor. It is even more fun when you have to change a mindset rather than just finding something pretty...
Extraordinary... and then there's those yellow hind wings!! It's amazing that butterflies are such a tiny fraction subgroup of lepidoptera and yet most people know them better than moths.
Thank you very much CastleSiavonga :)
Thank you LandmarkExpert :)
I could't agree more Jason! A few hours later I went back to the bush I placed him, and he was still sitting there. He just looked like an additional leaf, fantastic camouflage. And that bright orange color well hidden under the upper wings...
Jakubko, It is great with people like you, who are truly passionate about something so specific as moths! I am very happy to contribute to your mission! Tina
Terrific moth! I'm so glad you rescued this beauty! Please add this moth to my mission, "Moths of the World:" http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8841449 Thank you so much!
Thank you very much Lauren :)
Thanks dear Nuwan, we should be happy there are no speed limits for ID suggestions, because that one was quick! :) Excellent
I believe Nuwan, has given you your ID on this moth. Very nice spotting.
