Field Notes

Description:

This is our big heavy Wetlands Toad. It emerges to sing and mate only after the first prolonged rains of the year, usually in early May. This year the rains were a little late and the first singing began on May 30th. They call very loudly all night long - as monotonous as listening to Cicadas. But it means the wetlands are functioning, even though greatly reduced and damaged. This toad can get as big as 8 cm long.

Habitat:

Mountain Wetlands of the Valley of San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
