Field Notes

Description:

A medium sized bird, mostly brown in colour, blending in well with the ground. This one is a female -- males have darker feathers.

Habitat:

Spotted in a park on the waterfront of Lake Ontario. Found throughout North America -- in the south, they are permanent residents, while the northern ones are migratory.

Notes:

Looks like it was picking up small stones and swallowing them whole.
