Field Notes

Description:

Family: Saturniidae, Subfamily: Saturniinae (Giant Silkworm Moth) Wingspan (150 mm - 6 inches). Female. Pinkish cinnamon wings are marked with transparent eyespots surrounded by iridescent yellow and blue rings. Does not have mouthparts. Hosts: Trees and shrubs including ash, birch, grape, hickory, maple, etc. Live less than one week.

Habitat:

Woodlands (will come to light)

Notes:

This cute moth was at my front porch area for 4 days. I went outside at dusk yesterday, she was flapping (vibrating) her wings. She took off and flew up over the house. I hope her moth children come to my light next year.
