Description:

Azure Kingfisher (Alcedo azurea) is a small kingfisher (17-19 cm) locally common in Australia.

Habitat:

On the Daintree river perched on an over-hanging tree branch.

Notes:

This photo was taken at dawn, when the bird was still inactive.

They are stunning little birds, and this one let us get quite close. I've seen the Little kingfisher, lots, but always from a distance. And I've only seen the Sacred kingfisher in New Zealand. We get Laughing Kookaburras (the largest kingfisher) in our yard most days. I was trying to get a good shot of one yesterday, but my "assistant" (aka my giant puppy) chased it off before I got close.
