Field Notes

Description:

A large (6.2-9.0 cm wingspan) heavy-bodied sphinx moth. Forewings are pale grey or tan with darker grey and black banding. The outer margin of the forewing is scalloped. The hindwings are pink, shading into tan towards the margin. There is a large black spot on the hindwing containing a bright blue circle, often incomplete and sometimes with a second blue crescent above.

Habitat:

River margins and low ground where food plants grow
