Wreathed Hornbill
Rhyticeros undulatus
-2.03706, 101.317
Field Notes
Description:
These large, exotic birds can grow up to 8 lbs/ 3.65 kilos. Unfortunately, poaching of hornbills has recently been on the increase, as they are targeted for their beaks used in Chinese medicine.
Habitat:
Seen on the Bukit Tapan road near the village of Sungai Penuh in the Kerinci Seblat National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia.
Notes:
The first picture is of the male, as can be identified by the yellow pouch. In the second picture, the hornbill with the blue pouch on the left is the female. There were about 4 hornbills flying together in a group.
The flapping wings of hornbills make a really distinct wooshing sound. We heard them before we saw them.
