Field Notes

Description:

A very sassy cousin of the crow. About 8 inches long, with a jaunty crest on the head which it can raise up and down depending on it's frame of mind. Often heard much more frequently than seen, although it is not a bit shy of being seen.

Habitat:

This species is found all over the US east of the Rockies, in almost every habitat. Cities, parks, yards, woods, meadows; it is a very intelligent and adaptable bird.

My pair has taken up residence somewhere in the wild tangle of a thicket adjacent to my yard. They were patrolling my yard and garden after I cultivated the ground looking for grubs and such.

Notes:

Between this pair and a pair of mockingbirds and a pair of great-crested flycatchers, not much goes on un-noticed in my yard... and noisly commented on. Cats and hawks have got no chance of sneaking up on anyone with these 3 pairs living in the area!
