Field Notes

Description:

Brown with a light gray underside. Wing feathers are banded and the tail feathers are a rusty red-orange color. One of the most common and well-known hawks in North America. Also occasionally called the "chickenhawk", though they usually tend to go for smaller prey items.

Notes:

They like to circle overhead while I'm out in the fields. Of course, they can always see me better than I can see them. Maybe someday I'll get decent photos of them.
