Field Notes

Description:

Larger than the Rose-ringed parakeet, this one has distinctive red patches on the wings. Beak is larger, more powerful too.

Habitat:

Urban, semi urban and rural areas where fruit trees or trees with edible seeds occur. It happily eats grain and corn (maize) put out for it.Quite common in Delhi though less so than the Rose-ringed.

Notes:

Supposedly got its name because Alexander the Great took some back as cage birds.
