Field Notes

Description:

Distinctive wing pattern, bold heart-shaped marks on abdomen, becoming bright red in mature male. Length is about 3 cm. This is an immature male.

Habitat:

Eastern and central North America. Ponds, lakes with marshy borders.

Notes:

Predatory, forages in fields, perching on the tips of plants, as do other pennants.
