Field Notes

Description:

Shiny black/purple spider. I believe to be of the Steatoda genus? It was very large, one of the largest I've seen in this area. I couldn't see any obvious markings. There could be some faded, perhaps? I did not see beneath it before it skittered away!

Habitat:

I'm guessing dark, quiet places. I found it in black canvas layers on my front deck.

Notes:

I found this hiding between layers of black canvas (that contained some cast iron pots from a camping trip last weekend) on my front porch. It did not seem very active until I shook it off the canvas. Help me ID? It had 2 large beetles near her, bound up in spider silk, assuming it was her dinner!
