Field Notes

Description:

The white-faced heron is a medium-sized heron with primarily blue-grey plumage, and white on the face and the front of its neck. The legs are long and a dull yellow. Sexes are similar. When breeding, the birds have long feathers on the head, neck and back. White-faced herons generally feed solitarily (this one was by itself) or independently in small groups

Habitat:

The side of a pond at the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens, established on subtropical woodlands. Home to quite a few native water birds including ducks cormorants and herons.

Notes:

The White-faced heron is found throughout Australia, New Guinea, New Caledonia and New Zealand.
