Field Notes

Description:

White, yellow and black patterned butterfly with full wingspan almost 70mm across both wings, quite large for its type. Top side of wings light colour with black edging. Searching for nectar in garden Petunia flowers. Caterpillars feed on a select variety of native Australian plants such as Native Caper and Bush Orange and a few other species.

Habitat:

Found in garden habitat near dry woodland in south east Queensland high country. Native to inland northern NSW and Queensland.

Thanks for the link MartinL. They are beautiful butterflies, and I did read that they migrate. It was unusually warm in the region I found it at the time, but also perfect butterfly weather.

We see this one sometimes. They seem to be more frequent. I believe they migrate here and certainly do not survive winter. Yours is a fresh female with clear view of her proboscis. Here is my male. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7848254
