Field Notes

Description:

Varying in color from yellow to green and also has a single "horn" on back of his body. Found in large quantities on the purple flowered plant in photo.

Habitat:

Warm, dry mountain. Small bushes with purple flowers, fuzzy stems, and a sticky resin all over the plant.

Notes:

My best guess would be that it is one of two things. The larva form of:
A. Some subspecies of hawk moth
B. Some subspecies of sphinx moth.

I have observed them and when they become large the will dig themselves into the dirt to make their cocoon underground

Species ID Suggestions

White-lined Sphinx Moth

Hyles lineata
