Description:
Histiopteris incisa known as the Bat's Wing Fern (aka Oak Fern or Water Fern) is a common plant found in Australia, New Zealand and other islands in the south Pacific region. It's a member of the Dennstaedtiaceae family. Fronds are soft and green. Up to two metres long, opposite on the stem, with deeply lobed segments. The rhizome is 2 to 7 mm wide, with brown or reddish scales, around 5 mm long.
Habitat:
Widespread in moist, sheltered situations, where it often forms extensive colonies. This specimen was spotted at the Brisbane Botanical Gardens, Mt. Coot-Tha.
Notes:
Appropriately named. Looks like little bat's wings to me.
