Spinner Dolphin
Stenella longirostris
21.3524, -158.132
Field Notes
Description:
The spinner dolphin is a small dolphin found in off-shore tropical waters around the world. It is famous for its acrobatic displays in which it spins along its longitudinal axis as it leaps through the air. It is a member of the family Delphinidae of toothed whales. In certain regions, such as Hawaii, dolphins spend the daytime resting in shallow bays near deep water then at dusk they travel offshore to feed.
Habitat:
From our first encounter with Spinner Dolphins at Kahe Point (Electric Beach), Oahu, Hawaii. They are really very common here between the hours of 0700-1000.
Notes:
I originally had the video assigned to the wrong spotting. The video is definitely from this encounter. On this day the dolphins were particularly friendly--and both my wife an I took turns out on the boat and swimming with the pod.
