Field Notes

Description:

Butterfly or moth. I found it in my backyard. It has gray wings with a velvet lining around them. I am unable to I.D it on the Internet, so help would be much appreciated.

Habitat:

🐛Just a grassy area with a few bushes, a cherry tree, 2 apple trees, and a lot of kudzu. ( my backyard)🐛

@Jeff Dreier: yes it does. I am changing the I.D to Cinnabar Moth, Thanks for the help.
Did it have bright pink underwings? The forewings suggest Tyria jacobaeae, the cinnabar moth. It has been introduced to the U.S. from Europe as a biological control of ragwort. I have seen a few in Cowlitz and Lewis counties.
