Field Notes

Description:

A lone Great Blue Heron perching on the bow of a boat in heavy snow. It was my first time seeing one in Kodiak and they are considered rare here. However, they are seen by birders each year, often around the harbor such as this one and also out the road a ways towards Pasagshak in some of the lakes and ponds (local birders post photographs of them, sometimes even in small groups).

Habitat:

On a large fishing boat in the harbor on Near Island. This harbor has lots of large fishing vessels as well as some smaller pleasure boats and charter boats.
