Field Notes

Description:

A large fly, at least 13mm long. Hairless, shiny black thorax and abdomen with a striking gold patch on the 2nd and 3rd segments of the abdomen. Clear wings. Red feet. A very large head with large eyes, separated by a small gap with 3 ocelli.

Habitat:

Adjacent to a small stream. Altitude 1000m.

Notes:

This is the only shot that I managed of this skittish fly. It doesn't look like I am going to get a species for this striking fly, such a shame.

Yep that bug is impressive Dave. I think I heard the heavy breathing.
Mark - Ha! I think you nailed it :) I do have a better Darth Vader bug though: http://www.blipfoto.com/entry/3205025 Dave
Nice one Dave. Maybe the ChunkyGoldbumDarthvader fly ?
How splendid! I have never seen a black one! Great photo!
Lauren - thanks. Yes, the hairless nature of the fly might be more suited to Syrphid. The search continues. The annoying thing is I remember seeing this fly on previous research. Dave
