Milkweed Aphid
Aphis nerii
32.7248, -117.108
Field Notes
Description:
Tiny little yellow bugs that suck the life out of milkweed, oleander and a few other plants. This is a non-native invasive species.
Habitat:
Tropical and Mediterranean climates. San Diego is a Mediterranean climate zone, so they flourish here.
Notes:
This is interesting! "Female aphids lay live young (nymphs), a process known as viviparity. Female aphids reproduce by parthenogenesis, males have never been observed in the wild but have been produced under laboratory conditions" (Wikipedia)
