Field Notes

Description:

Small (up to 35 cm TL), slender black, gray, or light brown snake. Sometimes a faint midback stripe and usually a light blotch on the fifth supralabial scale. Belly varies from deep red to pale orange. (information from Illinois Natural History Survey)

Habitat:

Woodland and marshland mix

Notes:

This snake was going through a shed cycle and wasn't as vibrant-looking as it could have been. It was found on Snake Road in the Shawnee National Forest.
