Actually those weren't but today while taking photos I got attacked again by the same flies and got some photos, will put them here. This time live ones, didn't kill :).
The earlier spotting of your Splayed deer fly, was it near those flowers? Adult males and females feed on nectar and pollen from this. (And unf. on our blood as well)
