Comments (1)

There are 2 Oystercatcher species in New Zealand, the other one being known as the South Island Pied Oystercatcher, Haematopus ostralegus. It usually only breeds in the South Island although non-breeding birds can be found all over North Island at any time of year. Haematopus unicolor is sometimes referred to as Variable Oystercatcher.
