Description:

A black type of fungi that grow on a dead dog wood.

Habitat:

Took this image at bar island, Maine, off of bar harbor, Maine.

I'm not very good either yet but I have found out how important it is to try to get all sides and angles - especially with the 'normal' mushroom types. This one would have some tiny pores on the far end (which would have been the downwards side). It's a huge subject but at least fungi can't run away :-) Happy fungi hunting.

Hi Jennifer. I think this is a Phellinus species of polypore. It would have grown when the tree was still alive and vertical. They cause white heart-rot in trees like birches. Might be what killed the tree. :(
