Field Notes

Description:

The blue jay is between 9 and 12 inches long. It is bright blue on top and white to gray on its throat, chest and belly. It has a gray-blue crest on its head and black and white bars on its wings and tail. Its bill, legs and feet are black. It also has a black "necklace" on its lower throat.

Habitat:

Wildlife habitat yard.

Notes:

This photo was taken through a window and solar screen, so it is a bit hazy.

Two jays landed on the tray feeder, while another jay was on the peanut feeder. They all looked pretty much the same size, but obviously the two on the tray were juveniles.
The one on the peanut feeder occasionally looked down at the other two as they sat there. When they started begging, it watched them a moment or two, ate a peanut, then chased both of the youngsters off.
