Field Notes

Description:

Two wrinkle-wing moths mating. They were attracted to a UV light first and then to each other. The third picture shows their original position, which was vertical (male on the bottom I think). The last three pictures are of the same moths after separation. Even though the antennae look the same for both, I think the male is the darker one based on the shape and termination of their abdomens. These moths hold their wings straight when landing with the wings closed, but when at rest the wings are wrinkled, possibly to look more bark-like. They are about 1 cm long. Family Geometridae.

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
