It certainly looks youthful. I used to do some kit fox surveys in the East Bay. These were spotlight surveys where we were looking for eyeshine. If we saw something, we would point all the lights at it to figure out the species. At a distance, at night, in tall grass, it was mighty difficult to tell young coyotes from kit fox.
Okay, after looking at some images of both, how about young coyote?
It was standing when I first was watching. It seems smaller than a coyote and has a big tail too. I'm not an expert though.
I think you guys are wrong. Check this out. http://www.arkive.org/grey-fox/urocyon-cinereoargenteus/image-G97133.html Same animal
Cant really help with ID on this one, but great spot indeed!
I'm not sold that you've spotted a grey fox here. It looks too big to be a fox, and is also out hunting in the daytime, something grey foxes aren't exactly known for. It bears a lot more resemblance to a coyote, or perhaps a feral dog of some kind.
I am leaning toward coyote due to the longer snout, and lack of dark markings on the face. Most of my references show these black or otherwise dark markings. I wish we could reference field guides on this site. What do you think?
