Field Notes

Description:

The Green Darner dragonfly is about 3 inches in length and has a wingspan up to 4 inches. It has an unmarked green thorax. Males have a bluish-purple abdomen with a black dorsal stripe that broadens near the end of the abdomen. Wings are clear & become amber-tinted with age. They have a black "bulls-eye" mark on the face in front of their eyes.

Habitat:

Spotted near Pine Lake at Tamarac NWR. Nymphs develop in lakes, ponds, and slow streams & rivers. Adults are strong fliers and found in a variety of habitats including grasslands, forests, and urban area.

Notes:

Common Green Darners migrate in fall and spring from northern United States south to Texas and Mexico.
