Field Notes

Description:

I have seen Red, pink, white, light violet, violet colored Rhododendron. Flowers come on the top of the tree. Trees are not very tall.

Habitat:

In the Himalayan jungles. I have seen Rhododendrons in jungles of Sikkim and Uttarakhand both in India.

Notes:

The residents of mountain villages say Rhododendron flowers are poisonous except the violet ones. Juices are made of this type of Rhododendron. I have taken drink made of Rhododendron. As per the villagers, cows-goats also die if they eat other types.

Rhododendron flowers are edible. I have had a small bouquet snatched from me at Chail, India by monkeys who enjoyed the flower salad; later I enjoyed a drink made of Rhododendron flowers (red) called Buransh I think. It was being bottled and sold too.
