Field Notes
Description:
Caps: 2 to 5 centimeters wide, convex to nearly flat, rimose, red, velvety, cracked with yellow showing within the cracks; flesh is yellow, bruising blue.
Pore surface: Yellow at first, turning brownish with age, bruising blue, area around the stem depressed; up to 2 angular pores per millimeter; tubes are up to 1 centimeter deep.
Stems: 2 to 5 centimeters tall by up to 1 centimeter thick, red, yellow at the apex, solid; equal, tapering at the base; white to yellowed basal mycelium.
Context: Yellow, bruising blue.
Spore print: Olive-brown.
Habitat: Hardwoods.
Season: Summer.
Edibility: Not edible.
