Field Notes

Description:

I don't KNOW! I've never seen it before. It is a thin wasp, building a shallow cylindrical nest...but like a mud dauber, seems to be filling the holes as he/she goes. I would think it a yellow jacket, but it is completely unaggressive, seems interested in the flowers, and has a very distinct banded (yellow black) on its bottom. Wings are thin, antennae are straightish and thin, and its legs do NOT appear to be yellow! I can't figure it out!

Habitat:

Los Angeles, West side, fourplex, recently converted lawn to bee, bird and butterfly native plants.

Notes:

Its alone, seems to build very slowly. Like a cell a day. But does appear to be covering the cells as it goes. Only 5 cells now, but will keep you posted. I'm dying to know what it is! I'm sorry the pic is not better, it is as close as I could get.
