Common House Gecko
Hemidactylus frenatus
22.5417, 88.3164
Field Notes
Description:
This one is baby. About the size of a "little finger." Its skin is translucent. Soon it will become a dirty creamy colour.
Habitat:
Inside homes, particularly near light bulbs and tubelights where they can catch insects that congregate near the light source.
Notes:
Very effective natural insect pest control device of nature, snaps up cockroaches too. During the heat of summer it likes to come down to cool floors and then startles the inhabitants who are accustomed to seeing these lizards only on the walls. The Garden lizards ( Calotes varsicolor) with their long tails rarely enter homes and these House Geckos rarely venture out. They even lay eggs inside the house, in corners of cupboards, lofts etc. One adult has colonized my letterbox.
