Field Notes
Description:
The brown recluse is a medium sized wandering spider, and one of the few spider in North America whose bite is actually dangerous to humans. Brown recluse tend to live in secluded, out of the way areas with plenty of hiding places, such as debris piles, and do very well indoors.
A brown recluse is easily recognized by the fiddle shaped marking, readily visible in this photo, on its cephalothorax.
Recluse bites are uncommon, and serious complications are uncommon among bites, though medical treatment is still recommended.
Habitat:
This individual was found in an indoor storage area, similar in furnishing to an attached garage.
Notes:
This spider was slightly larger than a U.S. quarter.
