Field Notes

Description:

This tiny bird is 9 to 11 cm (3.5 to 4.3 in) in length. It is olive to gray above and olive/buffy below. There are two white wingbars and a white eye ring that is broken above and below the eye. The male has a ruby/red to orange crown patch that is often hidden by nearby feathers. The female is similar but without the red crown patch.

Habitat:

Northern coniferous forests in Canada and the US.
