Black and Yellow Garden Spider
Argiope aurantia
37.226, -95.7074
Field Notes
Description:
A beautiful female black and yellow garden spider. I remember seeing these all the time as a kid around my house and absolutely losing it at the size of them. I didn't realize their venom was completely harmless to us at the time so I would just run away. A seriously gorgeous spider, it's latin binomial name means "gilded silver face" and that's awesome.
Habitat:
Yellow garden spiders often build webs in areas adjacent to open sunny fields where they stay concealed and protected from the wind. The spider can also be found along the eaves of houses and outbuildings or in any tall vegetation where they can securely stretch a web.
Notes:
If you've never seen a spiderling of this species I'd highly reccomend a google search, they are tiny and adorable.
