Field Notes

Description:

While Reishi commonly grow on small stems or from the trunks of standing trees, G. sessile, eastern USA's most common variety, typically grows from rot on the ground, with little or no stem. Although asian and more common varieties have been used for medicine for ages, little research has been done on G. sessile's medicinal qualities, although some do still collect and make teas from it as if it were other species.

Habitat:

This young one was sprouting out of the massive stump-like corpse of last year's backyard reishi, which grew from a flat stump in a very large, round, platter-like fashion.
