Field Notes

Description:

I think it was a type of merganser because of its beak but I didn't get a great look because the sun was so bright as it set. It was brownish I think and had some white on its wing

Habitat:

Salt or brackish water

No don't be I'm glad you caught it. :)
Sorry if I added confusion... I completely agree with Red-breasted Merganser.
Yup I made a mistake. I misread it Red-breasted Mergansers are wintering birds. Thanks for the catch JimBob. Though I still think it is a Red-breasted Merganser. Maybe look at the bills in comparison to the head and the elongation of the body? It just looks like a Red-breasted Merganser to me.
I used the ebird dynamic map and it seems like both species can be found in my area when you enter the Mar-May time range, but from Jun-Jul they are almost completely gone from Florida.
Just want to say, Rosa, Red-breasted Mergansers are winter birds in Florida as well. The last ones of them tend to leave in May, according to eBird.org.
There are two Merganser species that come and go in Florida. Hooded Mergansers come in the winter while Red-breasted Mergansers are here in the summer.
