I believe you are right Heather, thanks for the information! I found some with the same pattern but the coloring is tough.

Have you looked at the Catocala species? They're also found in New York and have strong banding patterns on the forewings, and come in many shades and colors. Personally, I think your moth looks more similar to Catocala than to A. impulsa, but that's my amateur opinion. :)
