Field Notes

Description:

Post-flowering specimen. When the flower head dries, the petals and stamens drop off and the bracts curve backwards. The parachute ball then opens into a full sphere. When development is complete, the mature seeds are attached to white, fluffy "parachutes" which easily detach from the seed-head and glide by wind to disperse.

Habitat:

North American. Photographed in central Georgia.

Notes:

Canon 80D, Canon 70-300mm lens
