Field Notes

Description:

This spotting is continuation of my previous one, found here: https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/17429436, and it was supposed to be posted immediately after - this spotting is more about that wounded bird, and its dead congenere, hanging from the nest on pic N° 5 (see notes). Cape or Black crow reminds vaguely of its cousin, Carrion crow, but it is slightly larger, more elongated and more elegant member of the genus. It is an all black and glossy crow ; and it sports long legs and a long, rather narrow beak.

Habitat:

This species of crow is of a confined distribution, and is found in southern and eastern Africa only. Here, observed in rural area of Kunene, very very dry, in acacia open woodland.

Notes:

These two were making such a noise, they sounded like a pair of angry dogs - they produced really loud sound similar to growling... I don't know if it's connected, but the crow in front looks like it has something lodged in its wing - and that looks like a pellet from a hunting shotgun... and there is a third bird (pic N° 5), hanging dead on the side of the nest. NObody wanted to explain what happened, but later on I heard that many people hunt or chase birds, shooting these pelles from slings.
