Field Notes

Description:

Orb weavers comprise a huge family of spiders, of which there are several hundred species in North America. These spiders vary greatly in color, shape and size, measuring between 2 - 30mm (1/16 -- 1 1/4") long.
Identifying Colors: Silver, Black, Yellow, Red, Orange, Brown
General description is metallic silver large, though the silver grows overtime.
Usually has a distinctive zig-zag pattern in the web formation. Spider orientation is in the shape of an “X”, characteristic of the orb weavers that build stabilimentum.

Habitat:

Generally, these spiders are found in tall plants and flowers as well as shrubs; they are fairly common and occur frequently in gardens and in the wild. Occurs throughout southern California, southern Florida, southern Texas, and southern Arizona; also ranges from central to south Argentina. This picture I took in my side-yard.
