Field Notes

Description:

Dark brown with spiny appearance. Plant bug.

Habitat:

This one was on the under-surface of a leaf a Solanum nigrum plant growing wild on a neglected patch of land alongside a waterbody.

Notes:

I have never encountered this bug before...of course before joining PN, I never went out actively scouting for bugs either.

John La Salle Yes there were many lady birds on that poor plant which had leaves that looked like lace. Thanks.
I think this is the pupa of a ladybird beetle (family Coccinellidae). Probably in the subfamily Epilachninae, which contains species that eat plants rather than insects (e.g. aphids) like other ladybird beetles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coccinellidae http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epilachninae
